What is “Princess and the Purse”?
This campaign was started in Moncton, New Brunswick. As a single mom, Lorraine Cormier was living day by day, working 4 jobs to take care of her children and was determined to make it!
Lorraine remembers going to the doctors and taking samples of makeup, lipstick or perfume out of the old magazines, putting them on her dresser and saving them for special occasions. Years later, after a lot of struggles, Lorraine went back to school at the age of 43. She currently owns her own company in Esthetics. One evening she began reflecting back and thought about how far she had come.
Lorraine wanted to give back and that is when she came up with Princess and the Purse. Take a gently used “Winter” (no white or beige) purse. Fill it with all the little
things we take for granted but that someone under a strict budget would not
spend money on.
In 2017, after reading all about Lorraine, I decided that I wanted to help the single moms here in Halifax. Giving back to my community has always been a passion. This will be my 8th year collecting filled purses and delivering them to a number of charities, including the Marguerite Center, Stepping Stones, Coverdale, and many more.
The purses are filled with items that are new or very gently used. Let’s make them feel good about what they are receiving. Once the purses are filled, they go into a Christmas bag and topped with colored paper…it is a gift to an unsuspecting mom. Items like shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, make up, nail polish, water bottles, books, mittens, hats, jewelry, hair accessories, chocolate, gift cards, scarf’s etc.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. It’s a lot of work but the feeling that you
get after is worth it. The overwhelming amount of gratitude the ladies express every year is beyond words. It is your biggest Christmas present to yourself.
Reach out to me via text, email or simply give me a call if you would like to help. 902.229.9823 or tammy@sutton.com Purse collection will end on December 6th, 2024.
